Broadcast Graphics

Merch, Team, and Sponsor Promos

Initially, I approached the league commissioner and executive producer with a proposal to integrate Riot Merch into our commercial breaks to build connective tissue between the game and esports fandom. Then in 2018, the North America League Championship Series was franchised and I established team org promo interstitials in our broadcast commercial breaks to target and help foster team fandom. These efforts naturally evolved into additional opportunities to showcase sponsored partnerships, and to this day, the incorporation of promo interstitials is still a core element of the broadcast format for both LCS and VCT Americas.

Melissa was adept at looking for holes and finding solutions for them. I can’t remember her ever coming to me with a problem that she didn’t already have a suggested (and well thought-out) solution for...Overall, [she] takes the initiative to search out problems and is solution oriented in delivering incredible results.
— Chris Greeley, LCS Commissioner (2018-2021)

I redesigned this standings graphic according to the new brand style for a partner’s commercial interstitial since I made the previous version (shown below left). The new look (below right) was highly dependent on hierarchy and a rigid grid structure that wasn’t the easiest to work with or make the template user-friendly, so I was happy to see it in rotation throughout the year of the 2024 rebrand’s debut.

2021 LCS Rebrand

Examples of a fullscreen graphic I designed in 2021 for showcasing player stats during LCS regular season match days. I created a user-friendly Photoshop template for our stats team to update and save graphics for posting on our social media channels.

The static design was also adapted and given animated components for integration in our broadcast graphics package so it could be used during post-game segments highlighting the standout performances of a selected Player of the Game.

A defining trait for a leader is not just someone with incredible insight and work ethic, but the ability to identify the talent of those they lead. Melissa was able to consistently bring out the best work from her photographers, setting a gold standard for event photography and graphic production...in all of Esports. Her work made my role as a publishing designer absolutely effortless and always captured the exceptional work of our team in the best light. Her humility and incredible talent made her a pleasure to work alongside.

2021 CLoL Broadcast Graphics Package

The 2021 LoL College Championship broadcast was the first show I had total ownership of as a Graphics Producer. I took the lead on the visual design of the graphics package, ensuring cohesion between the use of the CLoL brand and the execution of university branding. I oversaw the development of broadcast templates, decided on the implementation of team assets, organized and built our tool kit, and executed a 4-day show with limited resources—I even got to simultaneously operate/produce live graphics again. I took the opportunity to exercise my creative muscles to design elements like the top 8 bracket and match cards to support social media posts and fulfilled last minute sponsor requests.

2020 Friday Night League Fullscreens

The pandemic required us to adapt to and innovate for remote broadcasts, and part of that included some experimental programming shifts—enter Friday Night League. This broadcast was positioned as a concise segment to tee up the weekend game days, and as such was intended to be low lift so templatized real-time graphics were limited. After a couple iterations of the show, a few recurring bespoke graphics had been requested by producers and talent to assist their narrative talking points. I designed these static fullscreens and made them into user-friendly Photoshop templates.

Melissa was core to our team’s success, she was diligent in leading our show day graphics teams as well as creating our various pre-prepared assets for all levels of broadcast days across North American League Champion Series to the LOLesports WORLDS Championships.

Melissa is also a capable leader of both creative and technical individual contributors. Her ability to communicate goals and tasks to others allows others to find success within reasonable timelines. She leads and crafts with empathy and with an attention to detail.
